It is evening in the Twining Cables Rest Home for Superannuated Helpdesk Staff. The sun sets near the compost heap of rotting telephones. Old Gid, the gardener, mutters his way back to his shed. The fevered blows of an axe can be heard somewhere in the distance, the hamsters scurry around their ornamental run, and Fairy Triffid the killer sunflower is sharpening his sting. Even the leprechauns are dozing.

The mahogany panels of the drawing room surround a sound of teacups and slow oblivion.

As old Mr. Willis sits dribbling in his Queen Anne chair, lank hair caressing the dusty antimacassar, the drifting focus of his recollection shimmeringly fades and the camera of the imagination cuts to a dingy burger bar, somewhere in London suburbia...

And somewhere, a Noo Yawk singer with a big schnozz starts to croon a maudlin ballad.

TTTO "Memories", Barbra Streisand

Onions,
In the corner of the pan,
Misty near-transparent onions,
Just the way they were...
Scattered ketchup,
And the wrappers left behind,
Wrappers we swept up together,
Just the way they were.
Can it be that Wimpy bar in Camden Town?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? Could we?
Onions, with our arts degrees and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the onions
We will remember
Whenever we remember...
The way we were...
the way we were...
