Jan 22nd 2005
Nothing much has happened on the Discworld game front. I've updated some of the details in the faq to reflect the problems people are having with Discworld and Windows XP. But to recap the Discworld situation:

You cannot legitimately get hold of Discworld 1 or 2 on any format unless you buy it second hand. E-Bay is your best bet.

Discworld 1, 2 and Noir have big problems running under Windows 2000 or later.

Perfect have gone bust a while back and hence there are no new Discworld games in the pipeline. Nor will any of the bugs in Noir be fixed.

I'm not really updating this page often as I've kind of lost interest in Discworld but given that graphical adventures are dead these days I'd be surprised if a new Discworld game was ever released.

April 3rd 2002
Discworld Wrestling? I don't think so - the previous 'announcement' was indeed an April Fool. There are no new Discworld games on the way as far as I know though given the way some licenses such as Star Wars and The Simpsons have been pimped into every game format in existence, it could happen one day.

April 1st 2002

Just when you thought the Discworld games series was dead, a new Discworld game has been announced - not an adventure title, but a wrestling game no less! With a working title of simply 'Discworld Wrestling', the game is being programmed by little known Kneebonian software company Folo Interactive. To quote Josykn Khing, the company's PR spokesman...

'Folo Interactive are very proud to have been given this opportunity to create a game based upon one of the longest running fantasy series ever, the Discworld series. Initially we did consider creating a point and click sequel to the previous Discworld games but thought this would not do the Discworld series justice as there are already three such games. Instead, we sat back and took a long hard look at Discworld and at the most popular computer games of today and in a flash it came to us. Everyone likes the Discworld books, and everyone likes wrestling, so game that combined those two would surely be a smash!'

Discworld Wrestling - again, this being simply a working title - will let you play as one of twenty initially available wrestlers with more available once you have successfully unlocked them. These will include Rincewind, Carrot, Death, Foul Ole Ron and also Foul Ole Ron's smell who will be a separate character from Ron himself. The game is set to be released on the PC, Playstation 2 and Gamepark 32 on the 31st of November this year. Rest assured, this page will be the first with any further developments.

March 10th 2001

There have been a couple of developments since the last update. The former, which isn't much of a surprise, is that the budget version of Noir being sold by Infogrames for a tenner is just as buggy as the GT Interactive release.

The second is that while Perfect may be dead and gone, the whereabouts of at least two former Perfect members are known (the rest presumably working somewhere or other), having recovered from the doom of Perfect like the flying head of Dr Hill in Bride of Re-Animator. Chris Bateman has his own software troubleshooting company called International Hobo - a sort of A-Team for the games industry although they obviously do charge cash for this. He is also assisted periodically in this venture by Gregg Barnett, former head of Perfect who also has his own games company, Sick Puppy Games, though he has denied rumours that he ain't getting on no damn plane.

28th Oct

Discworld Noir is now out on budget and can be bought for around a tenner - although whether or not any bug fixing has been done remains to be seen.

19th Aug 2000

Well, it's been a while since the last update and still very little has happened on the Discworld front. Perfect have now definitely gone bankrupt, GT Interactive have been taken over by Infogrames, and there's zero chance of a patch for Noir ever appearing. I've updated the game faq with a section on Noir and the fact that Discworld 1 and 2 are almost impossible to get hold of .

29th Jan 2000

Not all that much happened on the Noir PC front - Perfect / Teeny Weeny have disappeared from view, possibly bankrupt altogether, and GT have yet to produce any kind of patch. A couple of calls to GT's tech support in the UK solicited the response that there was nothing wrong with the game at all - which is clearly cobblers given the amount of hassle people are happening. Further more, when asked about the Windows 95 installation problem, the tech stated there was a patch for this - and handed out a URL to this selfsame page - hmm. Noir should be hitting the Playstation around now - though whether or not it's as buggy as the PC version remains to be seen.

29th August 1999

I've updated the Noir Fix which can be found here or in the files section of the main Discworld Game pages (I'll add a files section to the Noir bit when I get time). Just unzip it using PKZIP or WinZip and follow the instructions - to cater for Windows 95a users who want to use Noir's minimum install (it doesn't fix anything else so unless you have Win95a and have found you can't install the game, you needn't download it)..

And on another note, Perfect Entertainment are now bankrupt - this happened a while ago, but I've only just got round to putting this up - possibly as a result of their legal shenanigans with Psygnosis a while back. On the upside, many of the staff and a lot of the company's resources have been transferred to a 'new' company, operating under Perfect's previous name of Teeny Weeny Games, although about half of Perfect's staff have been dropped or gone to seek employment elsewhere (apparently Gregg Barnett and Luci Black, the chief people behind Noir may well have left). Good luck to both those still with TWG and those who have left - although it does seem slightly unfair that a company that has produced several good games can go under while a company like Ion Storm who have produced nothing of any merit to date are still having cash thrown at them (last time I heard) by Eidos Interactive. Hmmmm...

15th August 1999

Just a quick update - the Discworld Noir / Josh Kirby Poster offer has now finished, so I've taken the banner down..

28th July 1999

And now for some good news and bad news. The bad news - if you're one of the many people who own the original version of Windows 95, not OSR 2 or anything like that - the original unrevised version, you won't be able to install Noir using the setup program - there is a patch apparently on the way for this but it's not out yet.

The good news is that I've knocked up a fix for this that will let you install Noir as a medium install - and you can find out how to do this here or in the files section of the main Discworld Game pages (I'll add a files section to the Noir bit when I get time). Give me a mail if you have any problems with this.

18th July 1999

There's now a walkthrough in the hints section of the Disworld Noir pages, again one which will get tidied up a bit later when I have the time. Also, as you may well have noticed, there's a special offer banner at the top of the pages, through which you can order a copy of Discworld Noir and get a free Josh Kirby poster into the bargain. The offer itself only applies to UK buyers of Noir as is, however, there is an email address to which enquiries about ordering Noir overseas can be sent, and given that the company involved, Software First, does ship software overseas, it seems likely that you will be able to get US copies of the game. As yet, GT Interactive US seem to have made no moves to sell or promote the game in the States.

On the bug front, there have been reports of a bug in Noir. I've yet to run into these myself on either of the two PCs I've played Noir on, but evidently a few people have encountered it. Apparently, sometimes changing the page in Lewton's notebook causes a crash, and having recieved lists of the specifications from a couple of people with these problems, there appears to be no obvious reason why this is happening. If you do run into this, I suggest you contact GT Interactive technical support for now.

Some people may also have noticed that the storyline page in the Noir section has question marks where the pictures of characters should be. This is because.. er, I haven't actually got round to putting pictures of the characters in yet. But I will. Honest *cough*.

13th July 1999

I've now created a hint file for Discworld Noir - click here to get it. It's in rough text format and will be tidied up, and a walkthrough added, when I've got the time (I'm kind of busy at the moment, holding down a full-time job and doing other bits and bats).

9th July 1999

Noir has at last been released - in the UK at least - I'm working on some hints, containing solutions to specific problems, which are nearly completed and should be up this Monday. A walkthrough will follow about a week later.

22nd June 1999

In a strange deja vu moment, the release of Noir has been put back a week (or two, depending upon which shops you ask) to July 2nd or July the 9th. But it has mastered. Honest.

And on another note, when Noir finally does surface, I'm planning on putting up hints in both hint-o-matic and text format on the pages, with a walkthrough to follow a week or so later. I'd appreciated if people read these before mailing me as I now have a full time paying job and other things to do so I have less time to spend answering game questions.

10th June 1999

Discworld Noir has finally mastered.. it should be released on the PC on the 25th of June in the US and UK, and probably at the same time in the rest of the world. A Playstation version should be released in September. I've got my hands on a copy and I'm pretty impressed - it's very dark, very playable, and well, very Noir.

23rd May 1999

The release date for Discworld Noir has been put back... some shops have the release date as June 25th. I'd expect it to be released some time at the end of June or the beginning of July though GT Interactive didn't have a definite release date when I spoke to them.

1st May 1999

Quite a few people have mailed me saying they're having problems getting hold of Discworld and Discworld 2. This is because Psynosis no longer have the rights to distribute Discworld games - the rights are now with GT. This means that they can no longer manufacture DW1 + 2 and so no more Psygnosis copies will be hitting the shelves. GT will probably be re-releasing the first two Discworld games but for now copies are scarce, so if you are after one of the games then you're probably best off checking second hand games shops. It's a bit of a shame, but that's the way it is.

19th Apr 1999

I've updated the Noir pages, and I've also managed to get a forum for free, thanks to Netbabbler. The forum can be found here.

13th Feb 1999

I've removed the links to the Perfect Entertainment, or some of them at least, since the site is currently under construction and is out of action for a while. I've also updated the Noir Q&A section with some more information about Noir - such as the release date which is now set to be some time in April.

11th Feb 1999

I've updated the Noir section a little, and I've also removed the link to the Discworld 2 Game Theme from the files section as Perfect's web-site is down at the moment and so the link won't work. As soon as I can, I'll get a copy of the theme and put it on these pages so you'll be able to get your hands on it again. On another note, if you're having problems getting the Midi music to play in Netscape Communicator, can you let me know, or let me know if it works okay? I'm having problems getting it to work under communicator here though it works okay under previous versions of Communicator. Isn't Javascript great?

15th Jan 1999

I've finally updated the pages - I was a bit snowed under, what with a new job and various other things - and I've added a whole new section about the forthcoming third new Discworld game, Discworld Noir, set for release in March 1999, which you can get to by clicking here or clicking on the Noir button in the menu bar to the left. I haven't yet updated the Discworld faq correspondingly but I will be doing that soon.

On another note, I seem to have had dozens of mails from people saying they can't get the ladder from Casanunda, or get the mouse burger, despite following the walkthrough. This is due to a bug in Discworld 2 which is fixed by the patch which can be found in the files section of these pages. However, the patch, once installed, stops the problem from reoccuring, but does not fix it once it's occured, so if you have run into the problem you will unfortunately need to load a previously saved game and try again. If you're experience problems with Rincewind's camel disappearing in the last act of the game, there is a saved game included in the patch that will fix this.

13th Dec 1998

I'm working now so I haven't had quite as much time to update these pages - Discworld Noir is still under development though, and you can find a preview I've written of it, along with an interview with Perfect Entertainment, at The Gamesdomain Review no longer available. I'll be updating the pages properly soon, with a new section devoted to Discworld Noir.

16th August 1998

Discworld Noir is still under development and will be published by GT, but Perfect have entered into legal discussions with Psygnosis, publishers of Discworld 1 and Discworld 2 for various reasons. The first two Discworld games are still available under Psygnosis's Argentium budget range of games, although whether this state of affairs will continue remains to be seen.

I've made a couple of minor changes to the pages - I've updated the links to Perfect Entertainment's web site which has changed address. It is now located at www.perfect-entertainment.co.uk - previously it was located at www.perfect.uk.com, and it can no longer be accessed through this old address. I've also removed the rules for Cripple Mr Onion card game from the C.M.O. section and now added a link to Andrew Millard's Cripple Mr Onion rules page, a pretty comprehensive page listing all the rules for the game. I've never played Cripple Mr Onion myself, and his page is the best place to get specific information on the card game.

Perfect have said that unlike the previous two Discworld games, which were (and still are) distributed by Psygnosis, Discworld Noir is to be distributed by GT Interactive.

The files section now lists the file sizes next to each file, and the hints section now contains a picture showing the location of the thief's hovel in the Shades. So if you can't find the hovel, please check this picture out before sending me a mail asking for help.

Finally, you can now download the 'That's Death' song from Discworld 2 in mpeg-3 format from the files section. You'll need an MP-3 player like Winamp to listen to it.

16th February 1998

Perfect have confirmed that there is a third Discworld game in development, called Discworld Noir.It pays homage to film noir, and is a much darker game than previous offerings. Terry Pratchett is apparently happy with the story, and the dialog is currently being written. Discworld Noir will follow the adventures of Lewton, an ex-watchman and the Discworld's first Private Investigator, as he investigates his way through the Disc's seedy underworld.

The game will be more serious in tone than previous offerings, although there will be an element of humour present in the games. The game will parody many well known noir films and 40s movies, and will also include a full music score and several recorded songs. The locations will be dark, cinematic and moody, and feature real shadows. Unlike the previous two games, Discworld Noir will use a 3D interface allowing players to guide Lewton around, as they collect clues and track down suspects in order to crack the case. Discworld Noir should be released on PC-CDROM during Spring 1999.

28th January 1998

Discworld 2 is going cheap - in the UK at least, where it has been released on Psygnosis' Argentium range. You can pick it up for between £14.99 and £9.99 - it depends where you shop.

Dave Budd has created a program that lets you play Cripple Mr Onion again your computer - you can find a link to it on the Cripple Mr Onion page.

Finally, the Hint-o-Matic Javascript help database now works with Internet Explorer 4.0. But it won't yet work with the Opera web browser - I'll try and fix the problem.

18th January 1998

Bad news for Mac-owning Discworld fans - Psygnosis are no longer converting their titles to the Mac, so it's unlikely there'll be a Mac version of Discworld 2. They're also no longer distributing the Mac version of Discworld 1, so it's doubtful Mac owners will able to get hold of a copy.
